How I Formed The Culture of Reading

As a child/teenager I was an avid reader my favorite thing to read then was the Atlas because while reading all these books I travel in my mind, daydreaming and getting lost in my thoughts So I get to see the representation of some of these places. Books were my favorite gifts to receive every time I was asked what I want, Me: A Book, excited.

When lamps were still very much in use I’ll burn lamps reading into the night, reading everything my hands could find, my Dad was an English and literature teacher he had a handful of books, finishing big novels in a space of hours, My thoughts become binding with the authors, I loved books.

I still love them, the smell, the smoothness of the paper, words that keep my eyes fixated for hours, making my heart race and mind travel, I always lived in another world, and wrote a thousand books in my head that never came to life till the growth happened and challenges of life happen but amongst all years this year 2022 brought back the zest to read and acquire knowledge mostly because I joined a book club on my frequently used social media handle, the likes of lengdung Tungchamma who reads  100 books a year.

So my goal for the year was to read a total of 20 books but I ended up reading 10 books, I don’t give it a pass mark, against all odds I’ve doubled my goal for 2023 and I know I’ll achieve it Here are the books.

The Richest Man In Babylon by George S. Clarson

Change Your Thinking Change Your Life by Brain Tracy.

In brain Tracy’s book he highlights the power of our mindset and having the right mindset alone can align us with the things we want. The first rule in all is the desire

Think and grow rich by Napoleon hill

Also hammers on the power of thought and desires, how they are linked up and how our mindset about wealth and finance can make the universe work in our favor to help us achieve financial freedom.

When you don’t give in to your emotions, you will be able to delay your reactions and think. Fear pushes you out the door and desire calls to you, enticing you toward the rocks. That’s the trap. What intensifies fear and desire is ignorance.

A human’s life is a struggle between ignorance and illumination. Once a person stops searching for information and knowledge of one’s self, ignorance sets in. That struggle is a moment-to-moment decision to learn to open or close one’s mind

Money is powerful but financial education is more powerful

If you learn life’s lessons, you will do well. If not, life will just continue to push you around. People do two things, some just let life push them, and Others get angry and push back.

Who Moved My Cheese by Dr. Spencer Johnson

I did a summary here and drew out key lessons that the author was trying to point out about the change and we handle it. Read the full summary.

What you are afraid of is
never as bad as what you imagine.
The fear you let build up in your mind is
worse than the situation that exists.

Most of the time why we find it hard to accept because of our fears and the uncertainties that change comes with.

How To Win Friends And Influence People by Dale Carnegie.

This was one of my favorite books to read because of how much psychology was discussed in it. Psychology is one of my favorite subjects to listen to or talk about.
The book details principles that help make us become more friendly, likable, and influential

When dealing with people, let us remember we are not dealing with creatures of logic. We are dealing with creatures of emotion, creatures bristling with prejudices and motivated by pride and vanity.

1. Become genuinely interested in other people.
2. Smile
3. A person’s name
4. Be a good listener.
5. Talk in terms of the other person’s interest
6. Make the other person feel important- and do it sincerely

An Essential Guide to Public Speaking by Quentin Schultze

A faith-based book throwing light on how public speaking is servanthood, how we should see it as rendering our service to people, and how to organize your speech, make research, and confidently deliver them. A key point that stood out was in the analogy she gave on public speaking, the use of storytelling and illustrations to get to the hearts of your audience. You tell the audience what you want to say, you say it, and remind them of what you’ve said which is the introduction, body, and conclusion of any talk or speech.

As A Man Thinketh by James Allen

The choice is yours: either master your mind to create the life you want or remain marred in frustration and

The soul attracts whatever it secretly holds—that which it loves and that which it fears. It rises to the height of its highest ideals, and it falls to the level of its basest desires. The soul broadcasts its frequency, and the
world returns it.
